Dr Lesley Jones, Head of Education and Pedagogy at Affinity Education gives Reading Eggs and Mathseeds the
BIG tick of approval for early childhood learning. We sat down with Lesley to find out why…
“Our Lifelong Learning Curriculum is Australia’s most progressive approach to early education for children aged 0-5, designed to develop emotional confidence, foundational learning, social connectivity and physical health and wellbeing. It is designed around three key stages of early learning. Our Healthy Beginnings program for babies aged 0-1, our Early Experiences programs for toddlers aged 1-3 and our School Readiness program for 3–5-year-old children which incorporates Kindergarten and Preschool. A big focus in our 3-5-year-old School Readiness program is skill-based learning which is where Reading Eggs and Mathseeds come into the picture.
Reading Eggs and Mathseeds are great platforms that fit nicely into our Lifelong Learning Curriculum. They are child-centred in the way they have been constructed, gamified so that they are engaging for children to work with, and another way for us to incorporate those early concepts of literacy and maths. Families are offered complimentary subscriptions and dedicated logins for their own child. Children have access to appropriate technology within our classrooms so they can use these programs while at their centre as well as at home.
Reading Eggs and Mathseeds tick many boxes for us including how they cover foundational learning concepts that children get introduced to as part of their school readiness program. They also allow for children to have different learning styles, engage with key concepts in literacy and maths in ways they find engaging and provides an opportunity for children to be building digital literacy skills we know they need. I consider Reading Eggs and Mathseeds superior products as they bring all these things together in an integrated and balanced way.
They are also really well thought through platforms, it’s easy to use for both teachers and children and this is certainly the feedback I’ve had back from teachers.
Another thing we really like about Reading Eggs and Mathseeds is the strong connection with primary school. For lots of primary schools, these products are very common platforms, which adds some veracity to the work we’re doing with these products, but it’s also nice that the children are using a platform that they can be familiar with when the start primary school. We’re supporting transitions between early childhood education and primary school, and to see that confidence emerging in children is really exciting.
What I love about Reading Eggs and Mathseeds is that they are very contextualised. We’re not trying to squash down a year 2 curriculum into a pre-school environment, we can access content that is very age appropriate. It’s aligned to school curriculums, but it is still being developed with the young learner in mind which is very important.”
