Why do we celebrate World Maths Day?

World Maths Day is celebrated every year to make maths exciting and engaging for all school-aged children from all over the world – regardless of cultural or socio-economic background, and regardless of ability. World Maths Day disregards the notion that you are either a ‘maths person’ or not.

What is World Maths Day?

World Maths Day is an international celebration of mathematics coordinated by 3P Learning (the makers of Mathletics). It’s free, all-inclusive, and open to schools as well as students learning from home.

What are the highlights of World Maths Day?

World Maths Day is all about fun, fast and inclusive maths, with Live Maths challenges being the highlight of the event. Students compete against peers from across the globe in 20 x 60-second live challenges. For every correct answer they achieve, they’re awarded one point which goes towards their total World Maths Day score.

Why does access to World Maths Day start on the 7th of March for some countries?

World Maths Day is designed to start simultaneously across all regions. Meaning that students can compete against students from across the globe – not just in their time zone. This also means that some students will have access on the 7th of March.

What are the technical requirements?

Read more on technical requirements here.

As a teacher, is there anything I can do for my students?

The number one thing you can do as a teacher is to ensure that your students can access Live Mathletics. That means, if you’ve assigned any curriculum activities, Skill Quests (previously known as UPF) or PSR work, it may prevent them from accessing Live Mathletics and the World Maths Day platform.
To make sure this doesn’t happen (and keep the assigned activities), simply head into the ‘Assign’ area of Mathletics and make sure student access is set to ‘Student Open Access’.

What does my child or student do on the day of the event?

On the day of the event, students log into the World Maths Day platform (Mathletics) here. Once in they’ll see the World Maths Day button. Once clicked, they’ll find themselves in an updated Live Mathletics console. On the right-hand side will be a World Maths Day panel, showing students which Live Mathletics levels they can compete in to generate their World Maths Day score.

How can my students or child prepare for World Maths Day?
How does the School Challenge work?

The School’s Challenge is a Year/Grade challenge. The school with the highest average score in a specific Year/Grade will finish top for that Year/Grade.

The score is worked out by taking the total points earned and dividing it by the number of students taking part from that school. If you have less than 10 students in a year group at the school, the overall score will be divided by 10.

On which day is World Maths Day celebrated?

This year, World Maths Day will be celebrated on 8 March 2023. On this day, millions of students across the world compete in Live Mathletics challenges to determine a global winner, while also participating in fun activities that highlight the wonder of numbers.

How do I participate in World Maths Day?
