Welcome to the Gauteng Maths Challenge!

   20-22 April 2015

NMCStudents and teachers from the Guteng province are invited to represent their school in this FREE and FUN online maths competition.

The Gauteng Maths Challenge will see Year 10 and 11 students compete in live, multi-player challenges. What’s more, students will be challenged with self-paced adaptive curriculum questions – all using the award winning Mathletics platform.

Graphic_2Registering your school to take part in the Gauteng Maths Challenge is easy. Simply complete a School Registration Spreadsheet and email it to us – we’ll take care of the rest.

  1. CLICK HERE to download a copy of the Registration Spreadsheet to your computer.

  2. Complete the spreadsheet with your school, student and teacher details, following the guidelines provided.

  3. Save your completed spreadsheet and email it to The team at Mathletics will email you back with account details for all your students.

  4. Once registered, students can access the Mathletics website and start warming up for the challenge from Monday, 13 April 2015.

  1. This event is only open to Year 10 and 11 students of Gauteng Department of Education nominated schools

  2. Points from Live Mathletics and the Mathletics Curriculum Activities will be awarded to students individually.

  3. Earning points in Live Mathletics: Students earn 1 point per correct answer. Earning points in Mathletics Curriculum Activities: Students earn 10 points per correct answer, with a maximum of 300 points from any individual activity during the competition period.

  4. Only points earned during the competition period will be counted. The specific times are listed below.

    20 April 12:00am SAST – Competition opens 22 April 11:59pm SAST – Competition ends

  5. A “school” is defined as having at least ten participating students. Only schools meeting this requirement are eligible for school prizes.

  6. To allow fair competition between schools of different sizes, school points are calculated on an “average points per student” basis. For example, a school of 500 students scores a total of 1 000 000 points during the competition. Their league table ranking would be based on an average of 2 000 points per student.

  7. Once the Gauteng Maths Challenge has ended, all results will be verified by the Mathletics team. Upon completion of verification, the winners will be announced on the website. The judges decision is final.

What is the Gauteng Maths Challenge?

This online competition is a celebration of maths to encourage and inspire Year 10 and 11 students across the Guateng province to enjoy mathematics and learning. The competition will run through Mathletics, the educational website for learning mathematics.

How do we register?

Teachers can register their school and students by going to the Registration section of this page and downloading a registration spreadsheet via the link provided. Complete the spreadsheet with your students’ names as per the instructions listed, then email the completed spreadsheet to the Gauteng Maths Challenge team –

Why should we participate?

It’s a FREE and FUN competition with some great prizes! This is an ideal way to inspire your students by doing something different with maths. Engage your students and celebrate confidence with numbers. Students are motivated to improve their speed and accuracy in live games which are suited to varying ability levels.

Where do students sign in to practice and compete?

All students sign in at, practice for the challenge begins Monday, 13 April 2015.

What curriculum questions will students answer during the competition?

Year 10 and 11 students will have a variety of grade appropriate curriculum activities to answer based on the grade level provided by their teacher at registration.

Our school already subscribes to Mathletics, can we still participate?

No, this challenge is for Gauteng Department of Education nominated schools only – check back for other challenges in the future.

How will the winners be announced?

See the Breaking News section for all updates throughout the competition. Prize winners will be announced at the Sci Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg on 24 April 2015.

Can I use an iPad or tablet to compete?

Yes, simply download the FREE Mathletics App from here. Sign in using your username and password. Please note that not all curriculum activities are available via the app, however all 10 levels of Live Mathletics are accessible via the iPad App.
