Mathletics School of Excellence – Hovingham Primary School, Leeds, UK

Jayne Warburton, CEO of 3P Learning UK, recently had the pleasure of attending a very special assembly at Hovingham Primary school  to celebrate how well the school use Mathletics.

The school serves a diverse community and children joining the school come with 26 different languages between them.  Hovingham joined the Mathletics community in September 2009, just over 18 months ago.

Jane Fisher, the Mathletics coordinator at Hovingham, has transformed the pupil’s attitude to maths, using Mathletics as the core resource and focus. The whole community has become involved, with parents and staff running lunchtime and after school Mathletics clubs. Jane told us that even the parents want their own Mathletics sessions to support their learning!

Hovingham Primary School has been working on raising self- esteem and promoting a ‘can do culture’ with the children and their families. Everybody in that community now believes that there are no barriers to learning. Mathletics is used in school and for home learning, each pupil has the target to gain one certificate every week of the school year. Jayne commented, “It was clear on my visit that the children at Hovingham love maths and Mathletics has certainly helped motivate them to achieve more.

The student’s achievements over the last 18 months have been amazing – here are some numbers for you:

  • Over 3 MILLION correct answers.
  • Students have achieved a grand total  of 5,572 certificates.
  • Students have earned over 150 GOLD certificates!

What is most impressive is that 6 students have achieved 3 GOLD certificates during this time! Special Gold award winning badges are awarded to every student who achieves a gold certificate.

As a recognition of Hovingham Primary’s outstanding success in maths using Mathletics, they have been awarded the title of Mathletics School of Excellence!  This is the very first school in the UK to receive this accolade.

Chris Edwards, Chief Education Officer for Leeds until December 2011, was also present at this very special assembly.  Have a look at his blog.
