Last month our Premium Account Manager Ashley Thomas spent some time chatting to teachers from international schools across Europe that are making great use of Spellodrome and ways that technology can help overcome the unique difficulties that come from teaching in an international school.
Raquel Galindo, from the International School of Turin, Italy, told Ashley how Spellodrome helps her overcome the challenge of having 21 children in her class from different nationalities and with different mother tongues. She explained, ‘Spellodrome allows me to group students according to their level of English and select different lists to develop their spelling and their vocabulary.’ She said it is also particularly useful for children who are not native English speakers as they can click on the words to listen to their pronunciation.
The children in Raquel’s class also love using Spellodrome. They are particularly fond of Cyclobot’s Challenge (similar to Hangman) and they like that Spellodrome helps them to learn in a fun way.
Angie Hjelset-King from Asker International School in Norway also uses Spellodrome in her class. From the start of the year Angie sends home the students’ log in details to encourage them to use the resource at home.
In class, they tend to use Spellodrome, along with Mathletics and Reading Eggs, as part of a weekly carousel or rotational activity for children and during technology lessons.
Angie explained how Spellodrome helps to support the phonics system in place at their school, allowing the children to practice and secure the skills we have learnt and explored in class, on their own and at their own pace. As the children progress, Angie celebrates their improvement, by sharing achievement on the class blog and on the school website. She also prints out certificates to present to the students in class and during school assemblies.
