St Thomas of Villanova Parish School teacher Megan Jackson now Reading Eggs Certified
Megan has been working for Cairns Catholic Education for the past 10 years. During this time, she has taught grades 2 to 6 gaining valuable teaching experiencing and insight into how students learn. She is currently teaching Year 5 at St Thomas of Villanova Parish School in Mareeba, located on the Atherton Tablelands. She is involved with her school community by running an Indigenous homework club after school with the Learning Support Teacher and mentoring pre-service teachers. Megan is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies through Griffith University.
This year she has taken on the role of eLearning teacher, providing support and teacher training to new and on-going staff in a variety of areas. She provides teachers with strategies to incorporate Reading Eggs into their classrooms, either through presenting at staff meetings or one-on-one training.
St Thomas’s is a Visible Learning School, taking on the ideas and philosophy of John Hattie. Reading Eggs allows for the students to chart their own progress and set learning goals – thus making Learning Visible. Teachers can use the data provided to provide specific, measureable and attainable individual goals for their students.
With the support of the Teacher Librarian, Megan is currently planning ways of integrating and implementing ICTs in the classroom to support Literacy Learning. This includes access to iPads and Chromebooks to enhance learning pathways. Discussions have been held with teachers around lessons/activities in Reading Eggs and how to incorporate these in a meaningful way to meet student outcomes.
