Mathletics is a world renowned online Maths Program aligned to the South African CAPS curriculum. During my time in Education I had had the pleasure of working with Mamsie Makhubela as the director of Johannesburg South District. It was at this time that I decided to approach Mamsie to undertake a pilot project on the impact of Mathletics in Primary Schools.
Overall schools who used Mathletics saw an improvement of 8% in the ANA test results.
Through consultation with both Maths Curriculum and elearning staff from the district, 4 Primary Schools were selected to take part in the pilot. The learners at these schools would have access to Mathletics through the use of government-issued tablets. It was agreed in consultation with the staff of these schools and district staff that the grade 4, 5 and 6 learners would be our focus. These learners would receive at least 12 hours of time online doing Mathletics during school contact time. In order to measure their gains it was decided to administer the 2013 ANA paper of the learners’ previous grades in February 2015. It was hoped that during March, April and May the learners would have spent 12 hours online. In June 2015 the learners would write the 2014 ANA of their previous grade.
