April Mathletics Master Class


We are pleased to announce that our April Mathletics Master Class is Mr. Gabrys’ class at College Heights Christian School in Lacombe, AB.  We were blown away by Mr. Gabrys’ dedication to motivate his class in Math using Mathletics and how he truly inspires excitement and the love of learning with his students.

Read on to learn about how Mr. Gabrys has integrated Mathletics into his class and school.

Mathletics has allowed Mr. Gabrys to engage his students while allowing him to spend extra time with those who need the extra help.

“I have been able to continue using all of the other great mathematical strategies that I have built up over the years, so Mathletics has really just been additional practice that my students work hard to be able to do each day.  As they finish specific projects or assignments my students then get to go on Mathletics.  Here I assign specific activities to supplement the program we are doing, but in many cases, Mathletics “is” the assignment.  I love this part of the class period, as my students finish and hand in their work, they are quickly and quietly onto Mathletics allowing me to really spend focused time with those 3 or 4 students who really need my help.  It has allowed my gifted students to continue to be challenged and has completely changed how my math class works.”

By implementing a special ceremony to present Mathletics certificates, he has inspired a drive to succeed in his students – even in those who have not been previously noted in their math achievement.

“Mathletics has helped me to bring excitement to my teaching and to build positive attitudes towards math, because of the wonderful recognition students get by reaching so many different personal goals.  The Mathletic Certificates are wonderful.  Every Monday, I print out a copy of the certificates that have been earned the previous week.  I line up the certificate winners in front of the class and I play the song “Pomp and Circumstance” (graduation music) while I officially present and hand shake each winner.  This is a humorous moment for the class because of the “big deal” I make about each achievement.  We laugh, and have fun, but celebration is key to motivation.  I even had a student who would try to slide into the line just to get a handshake even though she has never earned a certificate.  I would usher her back to her seat while encouraging her to actually get on Mathletics to earn 1000 points.  Then one week she finally earned her certificate and was a part of this recognition moment in front of her peers.  She has never been noted for her academics before, especially in math.  This moment seemed to click with her.  She earned 8 straight certificates after that moment.

“After seeing the wonderful successes Mathletics has been providing to my math classes I wanted to encourage the students in my entire school to use Mathletics more.  This is when I thought up the idea to do our very own CHCS Hall of Fame in the hallway of the school.

This hallway bulletin board has truly brought the excitement to Mathletics that I was hoping for.  There are now many more students from all grade levels working hard to get their avatar up on our Hall of Fame.  I love the friendly competition that students are doing to work towards the most gold bars/medals and most Live Mathletics points.

I truly love the excitement Mathletics has brought to our school.  When students are having “fun” learning, it’s the best kind.

Mr Gabrys’ passion for his students, math and learning is truly an inspiration. Keep up the great work!
