Mathletics Mastery Model

A mastery model is founded upon fostering deep, conceptual learning. A child with true understanding can use and apply their skills and knowledge to different scenarios.

There are three key elements to a mastery model: fluency, reasoning with mathematical language and problem solving. Mathletics supports all three of these strategies:

  • Carefully scaffolded questions – students demonstrate that they have mastered one level before being moved on to the next, building on their understanding each time

  • Skills are assessed in a variety of contexts – students apply their numeracy skills learnt to real life situations

  • Build speed and accuracy – students compete against peers of a similar ability in one minute mental maths races across a range of topics

  • Effective questioning – students explore relationships and are asked to explain the reason for their answer

  • Open-ended tasks – multiple possible outcomes cater for different ability levels

  • Use accurate mathematical vocabulary – an animated maths dictionary equips students with the language appropriate for mathematical reasoning

  • Derive equations – students construct the mathematical equation representing a real-life problem

  • Enquiry-based learning – a variety of problem solving activities allow students to apply their mathematical skills within everyday situations

  • Teach problem solving strategies – student and teacher explanations are given for a range of techniques, including draw a diagram, look for patterns, act it out, trial and error, make a list, estimation, work backwards and open-ended.
