September Mathletics Master Class

We are excited to announce our September Mathletics Master Class recipient – Carolyn McKendrick, at George P. Nicholson Elementary.

School: Carolyn McKendrick, George P. Nicholson Elementarysept masterclass

Teacher:  Grade 4/5

We were thrilled to learn how Ms. McKendrick has implemented Mathletics into her Grade 4/5 classroom.  She tailors her teaching for individual students’ learning abilities.  Ms. McKendrick is able to challenge her students based on their individual learning levels.  Read on to learn how you can differentiate your class by using ability groups within Mathletics.

“Last year I taught a combined 4/5 class. At first I wasn’t sure how Mathletics would work with half of my class being registered in a different grade level, but soon I discovered how useful Mathletics could be for a combined class.”

With Mathletics you can differentiate your class and put all your students into ability groups according to their levels.

“As a part of my combined class programming, I rearranged some units (e.g. teaching area of rectangles with multiplication), so I decided to explore the ‘create a course’ function. This was very easy to do, and I could make my own units to match what I was doing in the classroom, blending the outcomes of each grade level. It was so easy, in fact, that I ended up making three different versions of of my Gr. 4/5 course – high (challenge), medium and low (below grade level or students with low confidence).”

You can monitor your students throughout the month/year make course level changes accordingly.

” These groupings were flexible, so I was able to move students around at any time. I moved students based on their individual levels of achievement rather than their enrolled grade. I was able to challenge students and their own levels, and found it very helpful to have the Mathletics activities coincide with my regular course work.

“Mathletics made this so easy, that I plan to explore this function again this year!”

Thank you to Ms. McKendrick  for sharing.

Keep up the good work!
