Recently, there was a good article summarising the evidence based research of John Hattie and Robert Marzano into 8 powerful Strategies that make a difference in students’ results.
This got me thinking about how we can support this in schools. So here goes:
- A clear focus for the lesson– This is inherent in the course delivery to students. Teachers are able to show whole course or only ONE Topic at a time. Setting tasks further provides for this focus
- Offer overt instruction – Teaching Tools to support classroom teaching – Videos, GeoGebra interactives, Walkthroughs and Desmos Graphics Calculator
- Get Students to Engage with the Content–Activities provide instant feedback, rewards based, option to review an incorrect question. LIVE Fluency competition; students can invite their friends to challenging problems.
- Provide Feedback – Results can be viewed across the whole school, year group, class or individual highlighting strengths and weaknesses. Assessments linked to Outcomes with detailed reporting.
- Multiple Exposures – The random nature of the activities means repeating the task reveals different questions each time supporting Rehearsal and Review.
- Have students apply their knowledge– Equations, tables of values can be drawn using the Desmos Graphics Calculator. You can also use Rich Learning Tasks with open-ended problems.
- Get students working together –LIVE Mathletics allows for Classroom, School or World event.
- Build students self efficacy– In Mathletics you can easily differentiate the content without showing year levels which means providing success to lower ability students and supporting their belief about their ability with Maths.
