Queensland’s most recent Lead Educator is Marissa Egan, Year 5 Teacher and Year Level Coordinator at Miami State School in Mermaid Waters. Marissa is passionate about inspiring students to try their best, take control of their own growth and achieve their goals.
Building students’ confidence in their own academic potential.
Marissa plans her integration of mathematics resources into her teaching and learning carefully. Concepts are introduced with the support of eBooks for explicit teaching, later reinforced by access to Problem Solving Activities. With initially modelling of concepts, she consolidates student learning independently afterwards by setting tasks to consolidate their classroom learning.
Marissa establishes a student contract for the term, where tasks match weekly topics. Using the Flipped Classroom approach, her students have the option to get a ‘head start’ on the following week’s content.
Her students develop their automatic recall of number facts or procedural fluency by playing Live Mathletics which they find engaging, colourful and interactive.
“Students value a classroom and school-wide recognition system. In my classroom, students with the highest participation scores for the week go up on our Leader Board to celebrate their success. At the school level, I run a Junior School and a Senior School Class Champion competition. The students get very excited when their class is presented with the trophy on assembly (they also like to find out which classes got 2nd and 3rd place). Whole-school competitions have been run and our school usage has increased dramatically over the year.”
