The Make a Difference (MAD) Foundation launched its Mathletics “MAD Maths School” on World Maths Day 1 March 2011.
The Mathletics MAD Maths School became a reality through the generosity of Abbeydale Building and Civils, which sponsors the school and Smartcom, which has donated 45 3G Modems, the simcards and a data package of 100MB per month per learner for 12 months.
The MAD Maths school will issue each of the 45 MAD students with a user name and password. Each day the students can sign in and receive curriculum-approved activities for their specific grade and will be monitored by a dedicated MATHS teacher on a weekly basis. The MAD Beneficiary team will then receive a progress report on each learner on a monthly basis.
Mathletics and the MAD Maths School are endorsed by Scott Flansburg – World Maths Day Ambassador and the Guinness World Record Holder as the ‘fastest human calculator’. Scott attended one of the MAD Fundraisers in 2010 when he visited SA and announced his support of Mathletics and the “MAD Maths School”.
Mathletics is customised for the South African curriculum and covers the curriculum from Grade R to 12. Statistics show that the average improvement in maths across all grades, countries and abilities is 21.1%.
