With the government’s push to have coding as a new literacy, schools will be expected to provide some experience of algorithmic thinking and coding within their curricula. This workshop is for absolute beginners in this space who are interested in learning about algorithmic thinking, block based coding and unplugged activities they can use with learners when they do not have a great deal of access to technology.
The first part of the session will explore algorithms through unplugged activities where no coding will be used, but learners (and in this case participants) will develop a strong understanding of some of the core aspects of writing an algorithm. In the second part of the session, we will explore Scratch and CSFirst as free resources that can be used in schools or in coding clubs which provides scaffolded coding activities. For the brave amongst us, you will have some playtime to move beyond block based coding and try out learning some basic python coding language.
By the end of this session, the participants will;
have a strong understanding of algorithmic thinking
be able to use block based coding to execute simple algorithms in Scratch
have a bank of resources that can help them introduce algorithmic thinking and coding into their schools and curricula

This one day workshop develops teachers’ capacity to scaffold and engage students in the writing process, to engage all learners, to build stamina, and to maximise their performance as writers. We will include word work and vocabulary learning as a cornerstone of academic writing development for expository and other non-fiction text types. Student writing samples will be shared and discussed.
This is a hands-on workshop with activities, techniques and frameworks to show teachers how practical and simple it is to explicitly teach a number of powerful writing strategies that address the writing demands found in the Australian curriculum.
In this session we will explore some of the most recent and readily accessible research on what games bring to learning and the areas of the curriculum that they are finding most success. Like any other approach games will not be the answer to all learning contexts and objectives but there are definitely places where a gameful approach is proving highly successful We will look at the findings through some of the games and game-inspired approaches currently being used in classrooms k-grey. This webinar will have something for most teachers to take away and consider trying in their own learning contexts. This session will give all attendees some examples, show how they were used and the role of the teachers in each gameful approach. There will be a dynamic shared resource created in the webinar and on offer after for teachers to use and share back in their schools. You will take away examples that have a high probability of success if tried in your classrooms.
This webinar will take a primary based example of how to build a sequence of learning which addresses one or more of the Digital Technology Curriculum standards. We will look at the standard and see how we can use an unplugged activity to teach the concept of writing an algorithm and then actually write some algorithms using block based coding in Scratch. This webinar is for absolute beginners and you need no knowledge of coding to participate!
While the example will be taken from the primary level standards, this session would be useful for any teacher (or parent!) who would like to understand algorithmic thinking and coding a little more.
