Too many students believe they don’t need to learn, or that they can’t learn. Professor Carol Dweck contends that this is due to students developing a Fixed Mindset with regard to their capabilities. Dweck argues that learning is stunted and many social issues can arise by having a Fixed Mindset. She says in order for students to flourish, they need a Growth Mindset – a disposition that embraces challenge, seeks out feedback and values effort as the pathway to mastery. Could a Growth Mindset be the key to unlocking our students’ potential, and how can teachers and schools cultivate a culture of Growth in their classrooms and schools?

In addition to this, research suggests that the teacher’s mindset has a significant impact on the students in their care. How can we address our mindset in order to challenge expectations and improve our ability to recognise potential and learning in every one of our students?

In this course, teachers will learn about the research behind Carol Dweck’s Mindset. Teachers will learn about the factors that lead to a Fixed Mindset and how schools can cultivate a Growth Mindset. Teachers will explore how their approaches to practices around programming, pedagogy and feedback all impact on the mindset of their students.

Teachers will:

  • learn how to frame learning goals using the Growth Mindset language.
  • explore how to develop their teaching strategies to embed Growth Mindset approaches.
  • learn verbal and written feedback techniques to encourage a Growth Mindset and challenge Fixed Mindsets.
  • create a protocol/routine that guides student learning through the use of Growth Mindset Language

Developing strong, student-centered learning around inquiry, even at early ages, is a common driver of creative learning. Yet designing powerful learning experiences that harness genuine curiosity and work across the curriculum are just some of the challenges in helping young students become critical and creative learners. Understanding and applying the processes of Design Thinking is a leading strategic and innovative method for educators to embed enquiry learning into their practice.

Tom Barrett at NoTosh will guide you through the proven process of Design Thinking to help you explore, focus, and act on a number of teaching and learning strategies in order to improve the learning outcomes for your students.

Using leading research and key examples from Australian school settings, participants will:

  • Understand and experience Design Thinking for enquiry learning using a common school based problem.
  • Use a range of highly effective thinking skills and tools to refine and inform decision making.
  • Explore different uses of technology to support enquiry learning.
  • Develop innovative approaches to curriculum design using leadership skills, research and data.

In addition to the full day of learning participants will gain access to a range of NoTosh supporting materials and curated lists of further reading and research on creative learning.
